Braces & Fixed Orthodontics
Braces treatment aims to gradually correct crowded or misaligned teeth and the way they bite, using brackets bonded to the teeth and connecting wires — a widely used fixed orthodontic method.
What is it?
In fixed orthodontic treatment, a small bracket is bonded to each tooth and a wire running through them applies gentle, continuous forces. Over time these forces move the teeth step by step toward their planned position.
Brackets can be metal or tooth-coloured ceramic; the wire and fixation options vary by case. Treatment is planned after an intraoral examination and, when needed, radiographic or digital imaging.
Who is it suitable for?
Braces may be considered for moderate to advanced crowding, spacing, crossbite and some bite discrepancies, in adults and in younger patients at a suitable stage of development. Gum health and any decay are reviewed before treatment.
For some mild-to-moderate cases, alternatives such as clear aligners may be appropriate. Which method is chosen is determined for each person after an examination and orthodontic assessment.
How does the process work?
The process begins with an examination, an impression or digital scan, and imaging when needed. Brackets are bonded and wires fitted; at regular check-ups the wires are adjusted or changed to guide tooth movement.
Total treatment time varies from person to person depending on the scope of the case and how the teeth respond. Careful oral hygiene during the bracketed phase is important for a healthy course of treatment.
Aftercare
Once treatment is complete, a retention (retainer) phase is usually recommended to keep the teeth in their new position, using fixed or removable retainers. Regular brushing, interdental cleaning and periodic scaling help protect gum health.
Frequently asked
Is getting braces painful?
Bonding the brackets is generally painless. When the wires are first fitted and adjusted, you may feel mild pressure or tenderness for a few days; this usually eases within a short time.
How long does treatment take?
The duration varies from person to person depending on the degree of crowding and the type of bite issue. The exact timeline is shared by your dentist after an orthodontic assessment and planning.
Braces or clear aligners?
This depends on the features of the case. Fixed braces can be more suitable for complex crowding and bite problems, while clear aligners may be considered for mild-to-moderate cases; the decision is made together after an examination.
Can adults get braces?
As long as the teeth and gums are healthy, orthodontic treatment can be considered at any age. Suitability is determined by the dentist after an examination and imaging.
