Dental Fillings

A dental filling is a repair procedure that aims to restore the shape and function of a tooth that has lost structure due to decay or fracture, using materials matched to the tooth, after the tooth has been cleaned.

What is it?

As tooth decay progresses, cavities form in the tooth tissue. In filling treatment, the decayed tissue is cleaned and the resulting cavity is filled with a suitable filling material, restoring the tooth's shape and chewing function.

Today, composite (white) fillings matched to the natural colour of the tooth are frequently used. The choice of material is evaluated according to the location and size of the decay and the chewing force placed on the tooth.

Who is it for?

A dental filling can be applied for people with tooth decay, small fractures, or old fillings that have worn over time and need to be renewed. Symptoms such as cold-heat sensitivity or visible darkening of the tooth may require assessment.

If the loss of structure is very large, a different approach such as a crown may come into consideration instead of just a filling. The appropriate method is determined by examination.

How does the process work?

The procedure begins with examination and, when needed, an X-ray. After local anaesthesia is applied, the decayed tissue is cleaned, the tooth surface is prepared, and the filling material is placed in layers and hardened. Finally, the filling is shaped to fit the bite and polished.

Most fillings are completed in a single session. Short-term cold-heat sensitivity may occur after the procedure and usually eases on its own.

Frequently asked

Is having a filling painful?

When performed under local anaesthesia, pain is usually not felt. There may be mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards; in most cases this passes on its own.

How long does a white (composite) filling last?

Durability varies from person to person according to the location and size of the filling, chewing habits and oral hygiene. Regular check-ups help monitor the condition of the filling.

Should old fillings be renewed?

Fillings that wear over time, develop leakage at the edges, or have decay forming underneath can be renewed. This is decided with examination and, when needed, radiography.
