Dental Scaling & Polishing

Dental Scaling & Polishing

Dental scaling is a preventive procedure that aims to protect gum health by removing, with ultrasonic devices, the bacterial plaque and hardened tartar that build up on the tooth surface and around the gums.

What is it?

The bacterial plaque that builds up in the mouth over time hardens and turns into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed by brushing. Scaling is the cleaning of these deposits with ultrasonic instruments and suitable hand instruments, and the tooth surfaces are usually polished afterwards.

Tartar can play a role in the development of problems such as gum inflammation and gum recession. Regular cleaning is a preventive step that helps protect gum health.

Who is it for?

Scaling may be considered for people with gum bleeding, bad breath, tartar build-up, or those who want to support their general oral hygiene. For many people, a check-up and cleaning once or twice a year is recommended; the frequency varies according to the person's oral condition.

For advanced gum problems, more comprehensive periodontal treatments may be needed in addition to surface cleaning. The appropriate approach is determined by examination.

How does the process work?

The procedure begins with an intraoral examination. With the help of an ultrasonic device, the tartar on the tooth surface and along the gum line is removed; the teeth are then polished to make the surface smoother.

The procedure is usually painless; mild discomfort may be felt when the gums are sensitive. Short-term sensitivity may occur after cleaning and usually passes on its own.

Frequently asked

Does scaling harm the teeth?

When done properly, scaling does not harm the teeth; the enamel is not worn away, only the deposit on the tooth is removed. There may be short-term sensitivity after the procedure.

How often should scaling be done?

It is recommended once or twice a year for many people; however, the ideal frequency may vary according to the person's gum condition and oral hygiene habits.

Will there be gaps between my teeth after cleaning?

When heavy tartar is removed, the feeling between the teeth may change because the space it occupied is opened up. As the gums heal, this feeling usually decreases.
